Anti-Slavery International

Title: Anti-Slavery International
Description: Anti-Slavery International (formerly called the Anti-Slavery Society) is a research and campaigning organisation based in London. Originally founded as the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society in 1839 it houses a library of historical anti-slavery material and literature relating to both historical and contemporary human and civil rights issues.

Within the library there are over 3000 books on slavery and its abolition, including several titles which cover the role of the non-conformist churches in the anti-slavery movement, African colonialism in the late 19th century, and missionary and other expeditions in Africa, Latin America and Asia. In addition there are over 600 tracts and pamphlets covering both abolitionist and pro-slavery arguments from Britain and abroad (dating from the 1760s to the 1860s), as well as reports that document Anti-Slavery’s research and campaign work from 1892 to the present day.

Key journals within the periodicals collection include: Anti-Slavery Reporter, 1825 to present; Aborigines' Friend, 1839-1909 (incomplete); The African Institution, 1807-25.

In terms of audio-visual resources the library at Anti-Slavery International houses a collection of c.250 lantern slides and c.200 photographs which cover information about the Transatlantic and African Slave Trade and include 19th century images of slaves, slave ships, the Belgian Congo atrocities and African indigenous peoples.

In addition to research resources Anti-Slavery has produced three exhibitions, available for free-hire from its London office (transport is charged at cost):

  • The Changing Face of Slavery - a 20 panel exhibition, available in both A1 (59.4cm x 84.1cm) and A3 (29.7cm x 42cm) sizes, which traces the history of slavery from the time of the Transatlantic Slave Trade to slavery in contemporary society. The exhibition features information about black anti-slavery campaigners and authors of slave narratives during the late 18th and early 19th century, such as Olaudah Equiano (c.1745-1797) and Mary Prince (1788-1828).
  • Child Labour - a ten panel black and white exhibition, available in both A1 (59.4cm x 84.1cm) and A3 (29.7cm x 42cm) sizes, which explores the different types of work children do across the world, the history of child labour rights, and current information on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
  • Slavery Today - a ten panel black and white exhibition (56.5cm x 76cm) documenting contemporary examples of bonded labour, forced labour and slavery around the world, and focussing on campaign work initiated by Anti-Slavery and other international human rights organisations.

Full details about these exhibitions, and other educational resources produced by Anti-Slavery, are available c/o Anti-Slavery International, Thomas Clarkson House, The Stableyard, Broomgrove Road, London SW9 9TL, United Kingdom.
