- Title: University of Central England Library Services
- Description: The UCE Library supports the learning and teaching of the following faculties within the University: Faculty of Computing, Information and English; Faculty of the Built Environment; Business School; Birmingham Faculty of Law and Social Science; Faculty of Education (research); Birmingham Institute of Art and Design; Birmingham Conservatoire; Health and Community Care.
Materials of relevance to Caribbean studies and the history of Black and Asian people in Britain may be found throughout the library, primarily in the sections on media studies, women's studies, race relations, political history, migration, slavery, economic history, immigrant workers, social services, law, education and literature. The Children’s Collection holds books and audio-visual materials for use with children of all ages. The collection is weeded and updated regularly to reflect current educational practice and the requirements of the national curriculum, including the need for materials suitable for education in and about a multicultural society. Black and Asian material is included to meet demand from our students, to provide awareness and help counteract stereotypes, and, for children, to give access to positive role models. There is a small amount of literature by Caribbean authors and the history section includes a similar amount on the British Commonwealth and Empire and on the history of the West Indies. At the Art and Design libraries there is a growing collection of material on Caribbean and Black and Asian artists. All printed material is arranged using Dewey decimal classification.
