University of London Library

Title: University of London Library
Description: The University of London Library [ULL] is one of the major academic libraries of the United Kingdom and a founder member of the Consortium of University Research Libraries. The holdings now approach some two million titles and are concentrated in the Humanities and Social Sciences. About 5,500 current periodical titles are received. The University Library is committed to supporting both research and wider teaching needs across its field of coverage.
The arrangement of collections in the ULL means that material of relevance to Caribbean studies and Black and Asian people in Britain may be found throughout the Library.
There are 2 particular foci of strength for Caribbean studies: the Latin American Collection (including the Caribbean) and the Goldsmiths' Library of Economic Literature. These collections are further augmented by the ULL's holdings of maps, manuscripts, and general humanities and social science research collections, including theses. The historic and current periodicals collections (22,000 titles) are also a rich resource. Estimates of the extent of holdings suggest over 11,000 relevant monographs and pamphlets, together with 400 maps and c.1000 manuscripts.
Material on the following subjects, topics and themes can be found throughout these Caribbean studies resources: anthropology; archaeology; cultural studies; development studies; performing arts; economics; economic history; education; geography; history; history of art; human rights; language and linguistics; literature; music; politics; religious studies; social policy; sociology; trade and industry; tourism and women's studies.

Material relating to the history of Black and Asian people in Britain can be found throughout the ULL collections, particularly in the areas of English and Romance literatures, History, Sociology, Social Sciences, Psychology, Geography and Maps, Manuscripts, British Government Publications and Palaeography. Relevant items will be found which cover information about race relations, the history of ethnic communities in Britain, cross cultural psychology and mental health, voting patterns of ethnic communities and ethnicity studies in relation to particular groups, such as women or youth. There is also historical material relating to slavery and the abolition movement in Britain within the Goldsmiths' Library collections. The British Government Publications section of the library holds a significant amount of official material relevant to the position of Black and Asian people in Britain, currently being indexed by the RSLP BOPCRIS ((British Official Publications Collaborative Reader Information Service) project. Although it is very difficult to give an accurate figure on the extent of holdings relating to Black and Asian history in Britain, estimates suggest over 2000 items.
