- Title: Tower Hamlets Local History Library and Archives
- Description: Tower Hamlets Local History Library and Archives collects documentary material in a variety of formats relating to the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The Library contains books, pamphlets, cuttings files, illustrations, maps, audio-visual material and microforms. The Archives contains the records of the local authority and its predecessors, and also the records of local organisations, institutions, families, businesses and places of worship. Because of its location, over the centuries the London Borough of Tower Hamlets has been settled by different groups of immigrants from different countries and collections of photographs, files of newspaper cuttings, official reports and contemporary accounts are available for many communities, notably the Chinese in Limehouse and Pennyfields, the Huguenots in Spitalfields the Jewish community in Whitechapel and peoples of South Asian descent in Bethnal Green. Information on the history of Black and Asian peoples in the borough (particularly the Bangladeshi community) is growing and the library currently houses c.100 books, 3 boxes of pamphlets and 5 files of newspaper cuttings covering information on migration, population demography, racism, anti-racism and race relations issues.
