- Description: The University of Sheffield Library covers the following broad subject areas: Arts and Humanities; Social Sciences; Pure Science; Engineering; Architecture and Planning; Law; Medicine (and allied professions); Dentistry; Nursing; East Asian Studies; British Government publications; archive collections from a broad range of subjects. Items in the collection date from the 1600s to the present, with an emphasis on 20th century publications.
There are approximately 600 books pertinent to Caribbean studies, mainly covering information on the political and social history of the Caribbean region. Approximately 2000 books in the collection are pertinent to the history of Black and Asian people in Britain, primarily focusing on race relations issues. In addition, relevant material may also be found in the Left Pamphlet Collection, in the Main Library's Special Collections and Archives Department. This includes a range of 20th century pamphlets relating to left-wing political, social and economic issues published by organisations such as the Socialist Workers Party, the International Socialists, the Labour Party and trade unions. The Left Pamphlet Collection can only be accessed by prior arrangement with the Curator of Special Collections and Library Archives. - Access: The central function of the University of Sheffield Library is to serve the information needs of the University's own staff and students, but access is also provided to those outside the University who have a genuine need to use material and services not available in other local libraries.
