Nottinghamshire County Council Libraries, Archives and Information Service: Libraries Service

Title: Nottinghamshire County Council Libraries, Archives and Information Service: Libraries Service
Description: The Nottinghamshire County Council Libraries Archives and Information Service is responsible for the provision of a general public library service to Nottinghamshire communities, enabling people to gain access to knowledge, information, works of creative imagination and materials relating to the county's past and present. Throughout the Library Service stock mainly contains current, popular materials, but Local Studies libraries within the county also preserve and promote material from the earliest days of publishing to current titles.
The aims of the Library Service embrace the cultural diversity of the county. The strategy is to promote positive Black and Asian images throughout the whole county, through a multicultural policy, and to provide specifically for the linguistic and cultural needs of minority communities.
With regard to materials on the history of Black and Asian people in Britain the Library Service holds information covering the following subject areas, topics and themes: Arts; Cultural Studies; Economic and Social History; Health; Literature; Migration; Music; Politics and Government; Race Relations; Religion; Slavery and Abolition; and Women's Studies.
Under joint arrangements with Nottingham City Council (Central Library) the city manages a major African Caribbean resource as well as materials in Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu. These lending materials are provided in a variety of media formats.
Local Studies collections in the county also carry small holdings of press cuttings, photographs and ephemera relating to activity in local communities. There are no major special collections.
Please note that the above-mentioned Asian language materials are circulated to designated libraries within the service and individual libraries maintain English-language based African Caribbean and Asian materials in line with policy guidelines. All the English language materials are integrated into general stock holdings.
