Robinson Library: University of Newcastle upon Tyne
-
- Title: Robinson Library: University of Newcastle upon Tyne
- Description: The University Library consists of the main Robinson Library and two divisional libraries: the Walton (Medical) Library and the Law Library. About 75% of the library’s stock is on open access, while on-site stores hold the remaining material. The University of Newcastle upon Tyne was established in 1963. Before then it was part of the University of Durham, and the Library retains strong collections of pre-1963 materials. The University Library has over one million volumes and subscribes to over 5,000 periodical titles. It is expanding access to electronic resources, for example to over 3,000 electronic journals and to a large number of databases. Access to electronic resources is usually restricted to members of the University.
The subject areas covered by the Robinson Library are arts, humanities, science, agriculture, engineering, social sciences and education. There are also special collections of early and rare books, archive materials and a growing collection of audio-visual material. The Robinson Library has over 2,000 study places and over 200 computer workstations, and there are self-service photocopying facilities. With regard to research resources for Caribbean studies there are some 1,100 books and pamphlets, including a small number of late 18th and early 19th century pamphlets relating to the British West Indies. The library also houses a large collection of documents on microfiche relating to slavery and House of Commons Parliamentary Papers 1801-1900 on microfiche; both include research material relating to the Caribbean. Only three journals are specific to the Caribbean (namely, Economic Survey of Latin America and the Caribbean (ISSN: 0252-2217), European Review of Latin American and Caribbean Studies and South America, Central America, and the Caribbean (ISSN: 0268-0661)) although others (e.g. Cuban Studies (ISSN: 0361-4441) Journal of Latin American Studies (ISSN: 0022-216X), Wasafiri (ISSN: 0269-0055), etc.) will also include relevant material.
- Strengths: The main strength is the history of the Caribbean in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, with particular reference to slavery. The other main strengths relate to Creole languages and to Caribbean literature. The collection of material concerning popular music from the Caribbean area is growing.
