Title: Albert Sloman Library
Description: The Albert Sloman Library, as the central library of the University of Essex, is a major resource supporting the teaching and research of the University. Holdings are strong in all subjects in which the university has academic programmes and amount to over 830,000 books, periodical issues and microforms, including 3,300 current periodical titles. Two major area collections relating to Latin America and Russia and Eastern Europe are of national, if not international, importance. The Caribbean collection forms part of the Latin American collection.
The Latin American collection totals over 75,000 books and pamphlets, over 1,600 periodical titles (of which c.100 are current) and a substantial amount of material in microform. The emphasis of the collection is primarily on the 19 Spanish-speaking countries of the region, plus Portuguese-speaking Brazil. The collection consists mainly of 20th-century printed material and is in all languages.
Holdings specifically pertinent to Caribbean Studies amount to some 5,000 books and pamphlets and around 100 periodicals, of which 11 are active.
Of the monographs approx. 2,600 relate to the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, 1,100 to the English-speaking Caribbean, 400 to the French-speaking Caribbean and 900 to the Caribbean region in general.
The most heavily represented country of the Caribbean is Cuba with 1,700 monographs and 49 periodicals (1 active).
One major microform collection is relevant to Caribbean Studies:
The Cuban Missile Crisis, 1962. 586 microfiches and printed index (2 volumes) Alexandria, Va. : Chadwyck-Healey, 1990.
There are no archival resources relevant to Caribbean studies.
Strengths: The main subject strengths of the Caribbean Studies collection are in art history, economic history, history, language, literature, politics and the social sciences. There are also important holdings of reference works and bibliographies.
The main country strengths are (in order of number of books relating to them): Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana.
The entire Latin American collection (and hence the Caribbean Studies collection) is recorded in the Library's online catalogue.
