Concord Video and Film Council

Title: Concord Video and Film Council
Description: The Concord Video and Film Council is a registered charity concerned with social welfare issues. Originally established in 1959 to house audio-visual material on anti-nuclear weapon activities in Britain, the collection has widened to include sociology, arts and general education resources with specialist collections on anthropology, social work, art and medicine (Graves Medical Audio-visual Library). Most of the resources are available for hire or sale in video and 16mm film format.
With regard to the history of Black and Asian peoples in Britain there is an Arts Council collection containing programmes made by Black artists and a selection of approximately 50 film and video titles on race relations issues, available for sale or hire. Examples include:
  • Anti-Racism in Practice (Colour Video, 30 mins) - Professor Stuart Hall discusses with Len Garrison the effects of racism on children in school.
  • Bad Neighbours (Colour Video, 20 mins) - Portrait of racial harassment in the London Borough of Hackney.
  • Bhashahara (Lost Voice), Emerald Films, 1990 (Colour Video, 20 mins) - Video about the experiences of Bangladeshi women in Brighton.
  • The Devil's Advocate - Prejudice, Granada Television, 1981 (Colour Video, 35 mins) - Part of a Granada Television series on prejudices (i.e. prejudices between the generations, social class, race and religion, etc.) featuring the views of unemployed young people.
  • Here to Stay, ABCS Video, 1985 (Colour Video, 20 mins) - Documentary on Asian youth in Newham, East London, made by Surinder Puri.
  • Home from Home series: (1) A Sage Place to Be?; (2) Working to a Pattern; (3) Defending a Way of Life (Colour, Video, 30 mins each) - Three films documenting aspects of race relations in London's Spittalfields.
  • Our Colourful Lives: Hamari Rangily Zindagi (Colour Video, 15 mins) - A video about representations of Black peoples in the media.
  • Out of the Shadows, produced by Catholic Association for Racial Justice, 1988 (Colour Video, 50 mins) - A history of Black settlement in Britain which traces the arrival of Black peoples from Africa, Asia and the Caribbean over four centuries.
  • Out of Vision, Film Lok, 1987(Colour Video, 26 mins) - A documentary about the lives of four Asian women in Britain.
  • Skin and Coal, made by Social Film and Video Ltd, 1986 (Colour, Video, 52 mins) - The story of two generations of Black workers in the British mining industry, living and working in Doncaster, Leeds and Nottingham.
  • Struggles for Black Community series: (1) Tiger Bay is my Home; (2) A Town Under Siege; (3) >From You were Black You were Out; (4) A Common History. Race and Class Ltd for Channel 4, 1984 (Colour Video, 38 mins per programme) - 4 films about the unity and continuity of Black struggle in Britain.
  • Who Feels It Knows It. Nicholas Pole, National Film School, 1981. (Colour Video, 55 mins) - A film exploring aspects of autonomous Black culture seen through the eyes of women.

For Caribbean studies there is a small collection of titles covering topics related to history, sociology and women's studies. For example:
  • Caribbean Women in World War II:, London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, 1993. (Colour Video, 50 mins) - A documentary charting the story of women's involvement throughout the British Empire in World War II. It includes oral history reminiscences of four Black women, now living in London.
