Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Archive

Title: Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Archive
Description: The Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Archive, which was launched in February 1999, is an open access library and resource centre dedicated to improving Race Relations. The Archive’s mission and aim is to show Black and Asian (including South East Asian) history and anti-imperialistic struggles and in so doing help combat racism. The collection includes not only material specific to the UK, but also the rest of the World, with a large amount of American content. The Archive is divided into broad category areas, such as History and Politics, Education, Criminal Justice, Immigration, Employment, Culture and Identity and there is a separate team working specifically on Race and Housing. The collection includes books, reports, newspaper cuttings, articles, journals, videos, audio-cassettes, leaflets and posters. A database has been produced for this material, which has been catalogued using an extensive list of keywords and a simple classification scheme unique to the Archive. The collection is appropriate for general interest, ‘teaching-level’ study within higher education and ‘research level’. There is also material specifically aimed at children and young people. Much of the work of the Archive concerns outreach: taking the material to the community and working with school children and local groups as well as the production of resources.
The entire collection at the Archive concerns the history, welfare and achievements of Black and Asian (including South East Asian) peoples and material specific to their history in Britain forms approximately 50% of the whole collection. This includes approximately 700 books, 400 articles, 500 newspaper articles, 1000 reports, 100 videos and 5 CD ROMS (catalogued items). Also housed, but un-catalogued are 12 runs of journals (open), 6 runs of journals (closed) and 20 single issues or short runs of journals, 35 box files of articles and newspaper clippings, 40 audio cassettes, 100 leaflets and ephemera items, 100 photographs, and 20 posters.
Key finding aids available in the archive (in print form) include:
  • The Diverse Needs of Black and Minority Ethnic Communities, an Annotated Bibliography of Housing and Related Needs Studies (ISBN 1902496256).
  • Guide to Teaching Materials.
