Title: Papers of the Gordon family, Buthlaw and Cairness, 1642-1926
Description: This extensive family and estate archive contains 7 files and 3 volumes relating to the Gordon of Cairness estates in Jamaica, in particular their estate of Georgia, 1727-1899: correspondence dealing with legal, administrative, business, financial, trading matters, including accounts, reports on crops, lists of slaves, general news of events and weather, and some 1789 Jamaican publications. The collection also includes 19th century estate plans and a diary kept by Charles T Gordon when visiting his estate in 1887. Most of the materials are located at Shelfmark MS 1160: specifically MS 1160/5-7; MS 1160/9/4; MS 1160/14/1; and MS 1160/30.
Strengths: The main strength of the collection is the information it provides on estate administration in Jamaica and the sugar trade throughout the 19th century.
