National Library of Wales / Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru

Title: National Library of Wales / Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru
Description: The National Library of Wales has some 3,500,000 printed books on its shelves. Founded in 1907, and a legal deposit library since 1911, the Library holds a copy of almost every printed work published in Britain and Ireland since 1912, and has a good collection of earlier works, and works from other countries, acquired over the years through purchase and donation.
As a national library there is a comprehensive collection of works relating to Wales, not only in published form - books and pamphlets, magazines and newspapers, ephemera, microforms and electronic material - but also manuscripts and archives, pictures and photographs, maps, sound recordings and moving images.
Pertinent material on the Caribbean and the history of Black and Asian people is likely to be found throughout the Library's holdings of books, periodicals and official publications and, although exact figures are unavailable, searches on the library's online catalogue have revealed over 2000 books and 50 periodicals relevant to Caribbean studies and over 1000 books and 30 periodicals containing information on the history of Black and Asian people in Britain.

For Caribbean studies key journals and serials include the following: Caribbean Focus (ISSN: 0966-7806); Caribbean Health (ISSN: 1462-8120); Caribbean Insight (ISSN: 0142-4742); Caribnet: Journal of the Caribbean Studies International Network (ISSN: 1463-5798); Economic Survey of Latin America and the Caribbean (Published by the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean); The journal of Commonwealth and Comparative Politics (ISSN: 0306-3631); Journal of Commonwealth Literature (ISSN: 0021-9894); The Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History (ISSN: 0308-6534); Journal of Latin American studies (ISSN: 0022-216X); Latin America Monitor: Caribbean (ISSN: 0265-9115); Latin American regional reports: Caribbean & Central America Report (ISSN: 0968-2732); Parliamentarian: Journal of the Parliaments of the Commonwealth (ISSN: 0031-2282); and the United Nations Statistical yearbook for Latin America and the Caribbean (ISSN: 0251-9445).
In addition, the Library houses over 30 early works about the Caribbean that were published before 1801, including the following items:

  • 'An account of the arraignments and tryals of Col. Richard Kirkby, Capt. John Constable, Capt. Cooper Wade, Capt. Samuel Vincent, and Capt. Christopher Fogg,...at a court-martial held on board the ship Breda in Port-Royal Harbour in Jamaica...October, 1702...Transmitted from two eminent merchants at Port-Royal in Jamaica, to a person of quality in the City of London'; published in 1703.
  • 'An account of the loss of the Luxborough Galley, by fire, on her voyage from Jamaica to London: with the sufferings of her crew, in the year 1727'; written by William Boys and published in 1787.
  • 'An account of the number of Negroes delivered in to the islands of Barbadoes, Jamaica, and Antego, from the year 1698 to 1708, since the trade was opened, taken from the accounts sent from the respective governors of those islands to the lords commissioners of trade, whereby it appears the African trade is encreas'd to four times more since its being laid open, than it was under an exclusive company.'; published in 1709.
  • 'The Assiento contract consider'd. As also, the advantages and decay of the trade of Jamaica and the plantations, with the causes and consequences thereof. In several letters to a member of Parliament'; written by William Wood and published in 1714.
  • 'The civil and natural history of Jamaica'; written by Patrick Brown (1720-1790) and published in 1756.
  • 'The proceedings of the governor and Assembly of Jamaica, in regard to the Maroon Negroes: published by order of the Assembly, to which is prefixed an introductory account containing observations on the disposition, character, manners, and habits of life of the Maroons, and a detail...of the late war between those people and the white inhabitants'; compiled by Bryan Edwards (1743-1800) and published in 1796.
