Description: Primary materials in published form and scholarly publications. Largely historical, literary and sociological, to serve academic developments at Warwick Collection policy is geared directly to the academic needs of the following departments: Caribbean Studies, History, British & Comparative Cultural Studies, French, English, Sociology, Ethnic Relations, Politics, Education, Law.
Strengths: History: Caribbean colonial regimes (mainly English-, Spanish- and French-speaking); plantations & slavery; independence movements & post-colonial history. There is also a substantial Black and ethnic historical dimension in the Social Sciences division. The collection is in English, French, and Spanish.

Access: Any member of the public may use Central Campus Library on three occasions without charge during an academic year, on production of satisfactory proof of identity. Further use may be permitted on proof of need, for which a charge is usually made. A written application should be made to the University Librarian. Certain categories of individual, such as teachers, may be permitted to join the Library by special arrangement.

The Library participates in the SCONUL Vacation Access Scheme, which enables students to use the libraries of other institutions for reference only during those institutions' vacations.

In addition, staff and students from other institutions may access the University of Warwick Library for reference use only as follows:

  • academic and related staff, and students undertaking research-only degrees (e.g., MPhil and PhD), may use the Library for reference purposes throughout the year. You will need to show you are currently registered at another institution and your status as staff or research student
  • students on taught courses may use the Library without restriction during Warwick vacations. You will need to show that you are currently registered at another institution. In addition you may use the Library on three occasions during term without charge in any one academic year.

Note: Collection development at Warwick continues to be closely linked to teaching and research interests, and there is a predominantly comparative approach, particularly in history and literature, with much attention given to the Spanish- and French-speaking Caribbean as well as to the English-speaking territories. The history and literature of Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana, Antigua, Grenada, etc., receive high priority. As regards social studies, the historical dimension of the Black and Asian communities in the U.K. runs throughout the ethnic relations, sociology, law, politics and education collections.
