- Title: Caribbean Studies Collection: University of North London Learning Centre
- Description: The Caribbean Studies collection at the University of North London Learning Centre covers all aspects of Caribbean life, history and culture. Acquisition of material began in 1988 and the collection currently comprises c.2500 books, 32 current periodicals and a small collection of audio-visual resources used to support the university's undergraduate degree programme in Caribbean Studies. Resources about the Anglophone, French, Dutch and Hispanic Caribbean islands and the countries of Guyana, Suriname, Belize and Central America are housed in the collection, and there are a wide range of materials addressing the historical, political, economic, literary and cultural links with the region's former colonial powers. Information about the Caribbean diaspora, particularly the experiences of Caribbean peoples in Europe and North America, is also covered. The main subjects and topics covered in the collection include the following: Agriculture; the Caribbean experience in Britain; Cinema; Cultural anthropology; Education; Economics; Literature; Foreign relations; Geography; History (including the pre-colonial history of Amerindian peoples in the Caribbean region); South Asians in the Caribbean; Migration; Politics; Race relations; Rural communities; Slavery; Urban sociology; and Women's studies.
Most of the books and documentary videocassettes are shelved in the special Caribbean Studies collection but some general texts, covering topics such as slavery, French and Spanish Caribbean literature and the experiences of African Caribbean peoples in Britain, are shelved in the main UNL library collection. - Access: Students from UK Libraries Plus member institutions are allowed access with a card obtainable from their home institution library and an ID card from their home university. Teaching or research staff from institutions which are members of the M25 Consortium are allowed access and borrowing on production of an M25 Access Scheme card. Members of the public, not eligible under any of the above-mentioned schemes, can apply for reference access, granted at the discretion of the Librarian.
