Goldsmiths College Library

Title: Goldsmiths College Library
Description: Goldsmiths College mission has as its focus the study of creative, cultural and social processes. The interdisciplinary nature of teaching and research in the College means that materials of relevance to Caribbean studies and to the history of Black and Asian people in Britain may be found throughout the library; there is not one identifiable Caribbean, Black and Asian studies collection. In addition to books there are substantial collections of audiovisual materials, notably video, music recordings and slides. There are few relevant periodicals and no relevant archives. Printed material is arranged using the Dewey Decimal Classification.

Audiovisual materials are arranged by format. The social anthropology section is particularly strong on the Caribbean area. Elsewhere in the social sciences stock, material relevant to Caribbean studies and to the history of Black and Asian people in Britain can be found in the sections on media studies, women's studies, race relations, political history, migration, colonisation, slavery, economic history, immigrant workers, social services and education.

The school practice collection (SPC) holds books and audiovisual materials for use with children of all ages. The collection is weeded and updated regularly to reflect current educational practice and the requirements of the national curriculum, including the need for materials suitable for education in and about a multicultural society. The SPC has a collection of children's fiction from picture books to novels, with a good selection of materials by Caribbean authors.

The collections in creative and performing arts are a particular strength of this library and include books, exhibition catalogues and slides on Caribbean artists, as well as books, video and sound recordings of Caribbean music. There is a growing collection of literature by Caribbean authors in English, French and Spanish and the history section includes materials on the British Commonwealth and Empire and on the history of the West Indies.
