CONTENT AND STRUCTURE AREA
Scope and content: This item is part of the larger collection of Mathew family papers and is a plan of a sugar plantation on the island of St. Christopher owned by Abednego Mathew (b.1633, d.1681), governor of the island during the mid 17th century. The item measures c.100x60cm and features a large central plan of the sugar plantation divided into approximately 15 squares, each measuring 10 square 'chains' and labelled alphabetically from A-S. Surrounding the main plan are 4 detailed drawings of selected plantation buildings, entitled 'North view of the works', 'South view of the boiling houses', and north and south views of the 'dwelling houses'.

In the centre of the plan are the squares marked Q and R that were the sites of the buildings labelled 'Negro houses' and 'works', respectively. Surrounding 'cane land' owned by Abednego Mathew is labelled A-L and adjoining plantations are labelled with the names of neighbouring landowners, Patrick Blake to the east and Timothy Earl to the west. There is a detailed table of 'references' which provides an index to the lettering used on the plan and gives further details about the size of the plantation (approximately 187 acres). In the bottom left corner of the plan below the scale bar the plan is inscribed 'Survey'd and plan'd 20th May 1757 by Will: Cockburn Surv: Gen' and 'Corrected in 1800 by A. M.'
