CONTENT AND STRUCTURE AREA
Scope and content: This collection contains 50 photographs.10 are landscape images of the Cardiff Docks, of which 5 include pictures of steamships (Reference D/D Xgc 29/75-83). 40 are portrait and group photographs of Cardiff Dock residents taken between 1890 and 1917 (Reference D/D Xgc 29/1-39 and D/D Xgc 29/74). The photographs were taken by the Cardiff branch of Gale Studio's Ltd. and are mostly studio photographs of family groups and individual portraits of men and women. The majority of photographs have been printed as postcards with the studio's coat of arms design on the reverse. The collection is arranged into batches of either 5 or 10 photographs. 18 of the studio portraits feature images of Black men, women and children of African descent or African and European dual heritage (or mixed 'race'). Particular items of note are the series D/D Xgc 29/21-30 where 9 out of the 10 photographs feature Black residents of Butetown. Items D/D Xgc 29/38-39 are particularly noteworthy because they feature studio portraits of Black men wearing Order of Oddfellows sashes.
