- Administrative/Biographical history: The Butetown area of Cardiff developed when the West Bute Dock was established in 1839 on land owned by the 2nd Marquis of Bute. By 1890 Cardiff was one of Britain's largest coal exporting ports and throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries this area near the city's docklands became home to the different groups of immigrant seamen and dock workers settling in Cardiff. Throughout its history the population of Butetown has included people with cultural origins in Greece, Spain, Portugal, Cape Verde, Germany, France, Malta, Turkey, Cyprus, Malaysia, India, Somalia, Saudi Arabia, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, China, the Caribbean islands, West Africa and South Africa. Loudoun Square and its environs became the centre of commercial activity and community life for Butetown residents throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The membership records of some church and community organisations from this time occasionally provide insights into the ethnic diversity of the area.
