Administrative/Biographical history: The TUC was formed in Manchester in 1868 as a voluntary association of trade unions. The organisation is governed by an annual Congress which determines policy. Between 1869 and 1921 the administrative work of the Congress was carried out by the Parliamentary Committee. Since 1921 this work has been carried out by the General Council and by a gradually increasing number of committees, including Finance and General Purposes, Disputes, Education, Organisation, Social Insurance, International, Economic and Production.
Archival history: The TUC records deposited at the Modern Record Office was received from the TUC Registry in batches between March 1987 and 1991.

Scope and content: Comprises the contents of the registry. Deposited files include correspondence, reports, minutes, agreements, background documentation and collected documents included printed items. In prefix 292 or 292A belong to the main 1920 - 1960 archive. In addition, the records catalogued as MSS.292B belong to the 1960-70 archive, those marked 292D to the 1970-87 archive and those marked 292C to the additional records of the 1920-60 that have been subsequently deposited.
