CONTENT AND STRUCTURE AREA
Scope and content: Subjects covered include the rise in the number of Chinese and Asian seamen. Other issues include the Shipping Federation, Seamen in America, and topics such as desertion, wages, branch reports, and workers compensation. There are a number of articles detailing the growing opposition to the employment of Chinese labour over British and European labour, the demonstration held by the Shields and District Trades and Labour Council, the Veterans' Association, the Sailors' and Firemen's Union, the Ship Constructive and Shipwrights Association, the National Amalagamated Union of Labour, the amalgamated Society of Engineers and the amalgamated Joiners and Carpenters were some involved in this demonstration (records indicating over 5000). Key speakers on this occasion included Mr Havelock Wilson and Mr Joyce, MP. Lascars and Portuguese seamen are also discussed. The stress here is that these groups should have the same wages, so that employment chances are equal for all. Figures are given for the number of Lascars: 10,535 in 1891 and 15,251 in 1906. (p.4)
