CONTENT AND STRUCTURE AREA
Scope and content: The Mckenzie Heritage Picture Archive (MHPA) is a specialist image library based in London. The Archive provides publishers, broadcasters and organisations with photos and other images of African, Asian and Caribbean people, cultures and communities which span the 19th and 20th centuries and cover many topics relating to all aspects of life and community. Photographic styles in the Archive include contemporary documentary, travel, studio, portraiture, event photography and fashion, and historical material including the work of photographers working in the 1950s and 1970s. The images come from various sources; from professional photographers who represent a diverse range of styles and cultural background, along with representations of work from contemporary artists; and images from other collections. The holdings also include collections of communities around the world, in Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, and the Indian sub-continent, Latin America, the USA; wherever African, Asian and Caribbean communities are to be found. Photographic styles include documentary, travel, studio, portraiture, event photography, and fashion. Themes and topics presented by photographers include: protest, carnival, communication, daily life, employment, events, family, food, education, lifestyles, music, personalities, places, religion, slavery etc. Collections of note which have been included in the CASBAH database include:

  • The Black VictoriansThe Archives welcomes enquiries from customers. Images can be supplied in a range of formats and are loaned for an initial period of two weeks. Additional services offered include picture research, exhibition loan, photography and fact sheets covering various aspects of social life ( MHPA Brochures.
