- Administrative/Biographical history: The Leicestershire Racism Awareness Consortium (LRAC) was one of three major projects launched within the voluntary sector in 1983 - the other two being in Fulham and Hammersmith and in Manchester. Funded by the Voluntary Services Unit of the Home Office, LRAC is an independent organisation. At its inception, there were 19 member organisations, 3 associate member organisations, and 4 organisations with observer status. Membership included:

The principle objective of the consortium was to combat institutional racism within the voluntary community in Leicestershire. The aim was to examine the extent of institutional racism within the voluntary sector and to promote awareness of such racism through racism awareness training and other means, to help voluntary organisations in the county develop appropriate and effective policies and procedures to meet the needs of the multi-ethnic community.

- Scope and content: The collection consists of newsletters, annual reports, meeting minutes, and correspondence. There are records of the racism awareness courses run by the Anti-discrimination and equality opportunities groups (ADEO) as well as the management meeting minutes and annual general meeting reports of these groups. Issues covered include societal attitudes, racial equality in school, analyses of the impact of the 1981 race riots on the community and Lord Scarman's recommendations.
Other issues include local police relations. The collection also includes correspondence on the activities of the consortium between Rachel Carmichael and R. Hughes, the Home Office consultant. There is also a draft proposal entitled,' Ethnic Minorities and the provision of services with special reference to the voluntary sector' (1984).
