CONTEXT AREA
Name of creator(s): Henry Eyrl
Administrative/Biographical history: Henry Eyrl left his home in Thrussington on 4th December 1855 to join the 19th Foot (Yorkshire Regiment) at their depot in Walmer.In June 1857 Eyrl left for Portsmounth from whence the regiment embarked a month later for India. Ceylon was reached in October and Calcutta by November 1857. There follows a narrative of his life in India interspersed with Eyrl's religious views and self criticisim. Eyrl did not live to complete his narrative but it was completed by a comrade and sent to his family.

Scope and content: The narrative traces Eyrl's life in Ceylon and Calcutta, and throughout the following issues are discussed: his various appointments, his family and home news, the hardships of soldiers, life in the regions and his health. Of note, there is a description of Fort William, Calcuttal, mention of state prisoners captured during the Indian Mutiny (p.12) descriptions of the weather and climate, countryside and the Himalayas.
