Administrative/Biographical history: The Slavery Abolition Act 1833 abolished slavery in the British dominions, and a sum of £20 million was granted by Parliament to compensate the slave proprietors. The actual payment of the compensation claims awarded by the Slave Compensation Commissioners was made by the national debt commissioners under Treasury warrant.
Archival history: The earliest records of the National Debt Office to be acquired appear to be those relating to slave compensation which had been held by the Slave Compensation Commission and were transferred to the Rolls House in 1846.
